Red Sox 7, Dodgers 4, Cancer Research the Real Winner

SCEA Members witnessed history in the making Saturday night, March 29, 2008. A world record crowd of 115,300 watched the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Boston Red Sox in an exhibition game at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and SCEA was there!

In the words of Hall of Fame announcer Jaime Jarrin, who called his first game at the Coliseum in 1959, "It's not a game. It's a celebration. What a spectacular night." The game celebrated the Los Angeles Dodgers' 50th Anniversary, and proceeds supported ThinkCure, the team's anti-cancer charity.

From Our Officers

Tami Medina, District 54

We had an Angels Game and tailgate party in July aginst the A's, including a barbecue with hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and salads. It was a great family fun day!

In December we had a Christmas Casino party at Old World Hall in Huntington Beach. We had dinner, dancing, a Steak and Shrimp dinner and more! The turnout was about 350, and the evening ended with a drawing for great prizes.

Linda Valenti, Bakersfield 4-A

Our members loved the trip to the horse races in April. The Terrace Room is a great place to experience the races. On the way home, it started to snow on the Grapevine. It was a fun trip down the hill!!!

We also enjoyed the Ronald Reagan Library, Air force One was amazing, and we look forward to a great new year!

Kirk Murdock, District 41

Section 41 on the Central Coast had an exciting softball tournament at the Barney Schwartz Softball complex in Paso Robles. Teams from throughout the section participated. The weather was perfect—sunny and warm—and the softball fields are some of the best in the state. Store 1738's team was the winner in this hard-fought "round robin" tournament. Sunday, October 1st was the date for Section 41's Picnic at the Mustang Waterslides at Lopez Lake. This was the first year that rain actually threatened the event, but the rain ended and the fun began! We had a great barbecue, featuring Tri Tip sandwiches with all the trimmings. From 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. you could here the sounds kids and members laughing and enjoying themselves. Everyone that ventured out in the rain was rewarded with a great time. This was the 5th consecutive year for this event, and we look forward to enjoying it again next year!
